According to a passenger-driven survey on cleanliness of railway stations, Gujarat has emerged as the state with the cleanest railway stations in the country. the survey was carried out by the Railway Ministry across 407 major Indian railway stations. Approximately 130,000 passengers took part in this. The Railway Ministry said that the biggest cause of concern for commuters were lack of sanitation like stench being the top, followed by dirty platforms and lack of dustbins.

The ten cleanest railway stations are Beas, Gandhidham, Vasco Da Gama, Jamnagar, Kumbakonam, Surat, Nasik Road, Rajkot, Salem and Ankleshwar. Among these, five stations are from Gujarat. While Gujarat took the cleanest title, the survey said that Bihar is the dirtiest station. Madhubani, Bakhtiyarpur, Anugrah Narayn, Sagauli and Ara in Bihar are among the list of 10 dirtiest railway stations.

The survey was conducted based on 40 parameters and passengers were asked to rate according to that. Absence of stench, availability of dustbins and promptness in cleaning up extreme dirt topped the priority list. Though the primary audience for this survey was passengers, vendors, porters and railways officials were also approached for feedback. Ten interviews per station were followed by the surveyors. Based on these results, the ministry has ordered guidelines to zonal headquarters to ensure prompt and effective action.

The survey has been proved effective and hence the ministry has planned to come up with such surveys more often to understand the improvement levels across stations. Another important suggestion is to monitor cleanliness through an e-platform, which can also be used to send alerts so that concerned authorities can get real time cleanliness status.
