Kerala is now gripped with Onam fever. The ten-day harvest festival is the biggest event of the year in the state, with everyone taking part in the celebrations. From boat races along rivers to cultural programs and folk dances like the Puli Kali, Kerala’s culture and festivities are in full display during Onam. But if you cannot make it to God’s Own Country in time for the yearly visit of the mythological king Mahabali, you can still visit these cities across India that offer one of the most important parts of Onam: the Sadhya. The capital city is a melting pot of different cultures across India, and you can find a little bit of home somewhere in the Delhi NCR region no matter where you come from. For Onam, you can head to the places in New Delhi that come closest to Kerala. Dakshin is one popular spot, where you can order a Sadhya thali with authentic dishes in the menu. Mahabelly has its own extravagant menu, complete with non-vegetarian items. Other spots include the Toddy Shop, Zambar, Kausstubh and Kerala House.
Gateway of India, Mumbai
Mumbai has a huge Malayali diaspora, so expect some excellent celebrations during Onam. Several community organizations hold cultural programs and events across the city to celebrate Onam, complete with the Onam Sadhya for an afternoon feast. South of Vindhyas in the Orchid hotel is a good spot for a luxury celebratory feast, and so is Jamavar at The Leela. Saptami at Holiday Inn and Seasonal Tastes at the Westin Mumbai Garden City are also good spots. For a cosier and less flashy setting, head to Rice Boat in Bandra East or Hotel Deluxe in Fort. KKP Restaurant at R Mall in Thane and Taste of Kerala in Fort are also good choices.
The city of Kolkata will be hosting its own celebrations too. Like in Mumbai, you will find several communities organizing events and competitions to celebrate Onam, including folk dances and flower decorating tournaments. For a delightful meal without the events, you can head to the Kolkata Kairali Samaj in Kankurgachi or the Ammini Restaurant in Kalighat. Other spots include Hotel Swagath along Hazra Road and Ammini in Kalighat.
For those of you who are in Chennai, the city has plenty of places where you can catch Onam celebrations and feasts. Like any good neighbor, Chennai plays host to a number of events and programs for Onam. And for a good old Onam Sadhya, you can head to places like Ente Keralam, where the traditional feast will be served for several days. The restaurant has outlets in Poes Garden, Wallace Garden and Anna Nagar. Madras at The Raintree in Anna Salai is also a good spot for a more expensive and extravagant Sadhya. If you are going to miss the snake boat races and the Puli Kali performances for Onam in Kerala, you can still head to nearby Bengaluru in Karnataka for an authentic Onam Sadhya. The Satellite city has plenty of places where you can feast on the special Onam food. Ente Keralam mentioned earlier has its branch in this city too, at the Sivanchetti Gardens in Ulsoor. For a less expensive mean, head to Achayyan’s in Indiranagar, where you have a small Kerala mess setting. Malabar Bay in BTM has non-vegetarian items too, and there are other places like Kuttanadu, Kumarakom, and BonSouth as well.
