Chandigarh is a beautiful city that is a balanced mix of nature and modern architecture. And one of the most scenic attractions in the city is the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden of Sector 16. Outlined with different varieties of flowers that add to the beauty of an already exquisite garden, the Rose Garden has is a hit among travellers. The rose garden is partly one of the reasons why Chandigarh is also lovingly called ‘the city beautiful’.
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden was built in the memory of the former president of India – Zakir Hussain. The garden is home to 825 varieties of flowers and 32,500 varieties of trees and medicinal plants. It’s a delight to be here when the flowers are in full bloom, especially between February and March or the summer months.

The garden is also touted as Asia’s largest rose garden; it is spread over an area of over 30 acres, having 50,000 rose bushes in 1,600 species of rose, the highlight being the rare ones. Some special ones that you must keep an eye out for are royal William rose, europa-rosarium, rosa gallica, beach rose, rosa chinensis, centifolia roses, and rosa glauca.
Another interesting event to look forward to here is the Rose Festival – an annual festival held during February and March. The festival is a tribute to the beauty of the roses; in a way a celebration of all things beautiful. The festival includes joyrides, drinks, food, events, and competitions like that of photography, gardening, landscape, bonsai among others.
