If you’re interested in wildlife, adventure, nature and photography, Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary in Kollam is your answer. This sanctuary tucked away in the Western Ghats of Kerala is one of the best things about the state. It is home to an impossibly diverse range of flora and fauna – especially, endangered animals that have been given a home of their own, and are set free and watched over with care so that they do not fall prey to poaching.

You could really spend the whole day and night (yes, you’re allowed to roam around here after dark) just observing the bounty of nature; though it’s recommended that you do it with a guide. Both for safety and educative reasons. You’re even allowed to enter the restricted zone with a permit after proper verification so that you get to observe how majestic every species is and learn to care of  the environment. That is what makes Shendurney the most loved park; it offers adventure and spectacular beauty in equal measure.

This wildlife sanctuary is home to gorgeous animals such as elephant, tiger, bison, leopard, lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langur, sambar, wild boar, deer and many others. There is an artificial lake in the centre of this wildlife sanctuary where the animals occasionally come out to have a drink of water.

When at Shendurney, do not miss the jungle safari along with a guide. A jungle safari is perhaps the best thing a sanctuary can offer, and you should make the most while you’re at it. A second close is the adventures sports such as trekking and camping that you can undertake with the help of the authorities in charge there.

The best time to visit here is between November and February because the weather is perfect for it. If you don’t mind humidity, you will be able to have a good time here during the rest of the year as well. Located about 66km away from the heart of Kollam, you can hire a car or board one of the buses that are regularly provided by the Government of Kerala from Kollam to the Sanctuary.
