Gulmarg Cable Car in Kashmir
The hill station of Gulmarg in Baramula, Jammu and Kashmir is the most famous ski destination in India, and it’s not just for the snow. For Indians, Gulmarg offers a taste of alpine destinations for the fraction of the price. But for those who’ve already experienced the postcard-perfect scenes of the European Alps, Gulmarg offers a completely different experience. And you get to see a glimpse of that in Salomon TV’s new short film, Dream Trip: Kashmir. ALSO READ: 5 best Gulmarg skiing packages that are worth every penny spent!
The film is a result of the Dream Trip, an ongoing contest by Salomon TV that offers fans a chance to win an all-expense-paid dream trip to the destination of their choice with their favorite Salomon athletes. For 22-year-old Lovisa Rosengren of Sweden, that dream trip was to the magical valley of Kashmir, where she could ski the white slopes of Gulmarg and immerse herself in the culture of the region. Salomon chose her entry as the winner, sending her to Kashmir along with pro skiers Kalen Thorien and Cody Townsend. Watch their adventure in the video below.
In their journey, Rosengren, Thorien and Townsend fly to the crowded streets of Delhi before heading out to Srinagar. There, they explore the city’s sights, including serene Dal Lake, and take in the culture of this region that is so different from the rest of India, let alone the world. They then head to Gulmarg, a popular hill station but still very quiet and relaxed compared to mainstream alpine destinations. Snowfall for three days leads to what Thorien perfectly describes as ‘the best worst problem ever’: having too much snow. Kashmir’s Gulmarg is as far from a typical alpine ski destination as you can get. You won’t find shiny resorts and European sensibilities here. Instead, you’ll be met by the usual Indian mayhem, a remote location and people whose warmth melts away the frigid winter.
