The United Kingdom is a delight for tourists from all across the globe. London is one of the most sought after cities in the world for a vacation. Be it the historic city of Edinburgh or the beautiful Scottish highlands, UK is full of marvels. Indians, like most other people from across the world, are now beginning to visit the UK for travel. The first step is to get your visa sorted. Here is all you need to know about obtaining a visa for your UK visit:

Visa type:

You need to apply for a Standard visitor visa meant for tourists. It allows you to visit the UK for leisure, business or to receive private medical treatment. With this visa, you can usually stay in the UK for upto 6 months.

When to apply:

You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before your date of travel to the UK. You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

Visa fees:

A standard visitor visa costs £85.

While applying for the visa, you need to show that:

you’ll leave the UK at the end of your visit
you’re able to support yourself and any dependents for the duration of your trip
you’re able to pay for your return or onward journey and any other costs relating to your visit

The documents you will need to provide include:

a current passport or other valid travel identification
one passport sized color photograph
You need a page in your passport that’s blank on both sides for your visa.
You should also provide evidence that you can support yourself during your trip, eg bank statements or payslips from the last 6 months.
You’ll also need to provide a certified translation of any documents that aren’t in English or Welsh.

In addition, you might be required to provide the following information:

You’ll need to provide the following:

the dates you’re planning to travel to the UK
details of where you’ll be staying during your visit
how much you think your trip will cost
your current home address and how long you’ve lived there
your parents’ names and dates of birth
how much you earn in a year

You might also need:

details of your travel history for the past 10 years (as shown in your passport)
your employer’s address and telephone number
your partner’s name, date of birth, and passport number
the name and address of anyone paying for your trip
the name, address and passport number of any family members you have in the UK
details of any criminal, civil or immigration offences you have committed

How to apply:

You can apply online for a visa to visit the UK. The online application page on the UK government visa and immigration website is here.

Complete your online visa application form, pay the visa application fee using a credit card and book your appointment to submit your application at your nearest visa application center. Here is a list of UK VISA application centers in India.

To complete the application process, you must book and attend an appointment at the visa application centers in India. All UK visa applicants are required to book an appointment prior to submission.

On the day of your appointment, plan to arrive 15 minutes early at the visa application center. Bring your appointment letter and application pack, your passport with at least 1 page that is blank on both sides.

You’ll need to have your fingerprints and photograph (known as ‘biometric information’) taken at your visa application center as part of your application. This includes a digital finger scan (all 10 digits) and a digital photograph. You should ensure that your fingertips are free from any forms of decoration (for example, henna), cuts, abrasions or other markings as these may affect your ability to provide acceptable finger scans. Your digital photograph must be taken with full face and without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or head covering unless it is worn for religious or medical reasons.

Once the visa filing process is completed you will be issued with an acknowledgment receipt. Hold on to your receipt as you will need this later to collect your documents. Remember that you will not be able to submit further documents once your application has been submitted at the visa application center. The documents that you submitted at the time you made your application will be the only documents that are considered.

Choose whether you would prefer to collect your documents in person at the visa application center or have them delivered to you by post.
