Situated on the Western Ghats of Karnataka, Mangalore is one those cities where you’d find an abundance of export material coffee and cashew nuts. Mangalore is a hilly city with gorgeous, winding streets located some 357km away from Bangalore. It is said to have been named after the famous Mangaladevi Temple. This temple is a tourist spot, situated 3km away from main city area. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, and people believe that maidens who come and pray here for a good husband are blessed with one.
Since it’s in the tropical region of the country, Mangalore is unbearably hot and humid during summer but comfortably cold during the winter. So if you’re planning a trip to the city, now is the time. There’s much to see and do here. Visit the exquisitely constructed Sultan Battery, situated 4km away in Boloor. Built in black stones by Tipu Sultan, the remaining part of the fort today is known as Tipu’s Well. Although it is a watchtower, it gives the impression of being a miniature fortress with its mounting cannons all round.
Built in the 11th-century, the Kadri Temple is again worth a visit. The Lokeshwara bronze statue of the Kadri Manjunatha Temple is tipped to be the best bronze statue in India. Then there’s the very famous St. Aloysius Church, situated 1km away from the city’s main centre. The walls of the church are painted by artist Antony Moshaini of Italy and is nothing short of being an architectural gem. It is often compared with the Sistine chapel in Rome.
If you want to travel around the city, Dharmastala is a good bet, situated 75km east of Mangalore. It has a number of Jain bastis including the famous Manjunatha Temple. There’s also a 14m high Bahubali statue here, which was erected in 1973. Situated approximately 50km northeast of Mangalore is the Venur town. This small town is famous for its eight Jain bastis and the ruins of the Mahadeva temple. There’s another gorgeous Bahubali statue here on the southern bank of the Gurupur River. Mangalore has an airport 20km away from the main city centre. You can hire a car or hop on to a bus to commute to any place in the city from the airport.
