Located in the Nilgiris, Lovedale is a gorgeous hamlet and a perfect alternative to Ooty. If you want to escape the city heat, this scenic hill station is just about the right choice. A peaceful place with an understated charm; Lovedale’s natural beauty and a pleasant climate is what makes it appealing, especially during the summer months. Here’s what you must see on your trip here.
Perched at an altitude of 7,200 feet above sea level, the place was discovered in the year 1812; when the British came here to get some respite from the heat of the plains below. Lovedale has a strong colonial flavour that is evident in its old cottages, bungalows and churches. The highlight of this hamlet is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway or the toy train that also runs through neighbouring hill stations such as Ooty, Lovedale, Coonoor, Wellington, Hillgrove and Runneymede.
Another attraction here is the famed Lawrence School spread across a vast area of 750 acres. Located within the campus of Lawrence School, the 116-year-old Church of Ascension is a must visit too. Built in Gothic style of architecture, the church is a beautiful piece of art. It is also home to the great pipe organ which is amongst the remaining few in the country.
For those looking for an adrenaline rush, a trek to Devashola and Doddabetta Peaks are highly recommended. Lovedale is also just about 35km from the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, one of the biggest protected areas in the country. The biosphere reserve was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2012 and comprises of the Mudumalai, Bandipur, Silent Valley, Nagarhole and Mukurthi national parks as well as Wayanad and Sathyamangalam wildlife sanctuaries.
Lovedale is approximately 5km away from Ooty, and the nearest airport is the Coimbatore International Airport, about 96km from Ooty.
