Experts say a child’s formative years are when his character is built and self-esteem is established. We often hear about a mother’s bond with her child and more often than not fathers are not put in the spotlight.
There’s nothing like a father-son bond; and for young boys, these are the years when a father’s guiding hand is especially essential. Just spending time together — doing something — is always the best time for parents to impart values and morals to their children. Actions always speak louder than words, and when a child notices his father spending quality time with him, he’s also more likely of feeling assured of dad’s love.
Everyone is busy, but lack of time should never be an excuse for not spending time with your child. For dads and sons, there are tons of activities to do together that range from a few hours or an entire day. Really, if it’s that important, you will find some time.
If you’re looking at spending some quality time with your son, here are father-son activities that will help you bond. Consider stepping out of your comfort zone, also. Even if you have never done some of these activities before, trying something for the first time can be fantastic experience for both of you. Whether you’re free all weekend or have just a quick hour in your busy schedule, your son will really appreciate it — even if he doesn’t say so now.
1. Watch a ball game. There may be no activity more fun for a father and a son than to spend an afternoon at a ball game— it could be a basketball game, football or baseball (or whatever you like!). What boys don’t like sports? And watching them your dad just makes it so much more special.
2. Go fishing. When talking about father-son bonding, don’t you just get those old-timey images of them fishing? We sure do — because it’s still is a great way to bond. Teaching your son how to rig a line (or learning together) and sharing the excitement over a first catch will be memorable for you both.
3. Go to a car show. This could be a great way to connect with your son by musing over trucks, SUVs, sports cars and motorcycles. All boys love cars, so you’re both sure to have loads of fun at an auto show. Then, grab a snack together on your way home and car-watch for part two of your fun day.
4. Go on a road trip. Go on an out-of-town trip with your son. The time you’ll have driving for hours will give you priceless time alone with your son— just the two of you riding across towns and stopping for snacks at little joints. The adventure of exploring new places and traveling together could be the best opportunity to bond.
5. Work on a project together. Whether you’re building a rocket or simply creating a kite, the time spent with your son working hard on something will build your father-son teamwork. Plus, feeling of being able to complete the project is just amazing! This is also a great time to teach your son how to use his hands on tools while working on things.
6. Help with his homework. Now, if you’re son is swamped with school work, there’s still time to bond with each other. Help him out with homework, explain subjects he doesn’t fully understand, assure him that you appreciate that he’s studying well. Read the paper or do a crossword in the same room while he studies. — yes, this is still well-spent father-son time.
7. Pray together. Don’t feel sorry if the day’s just about to end without you and your son being able to bond over something. The two of you can pray together before bed. Ask him about his day and if there’s anything he wants you to pray for, then do it together. He’ll go to bed a happy little guy.
So many parents will tell you that their children grow up so fast and are gone before they even know it. Dads will also tell you that there’s nothing like spending time with their sons — playing basketball, taking a drive or just having a chat together. Father-son time is truly priceless. And years later, your son will have those memories to cherish and pass down to his own sons.
