Phagwara, Oct 27 (PTI) A policeman was arrested and another cop booked on charges of fraud and extortion here, a senior official said Saturday.

Phagwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Mandeep Singh Gill identified the constable as Manjinder Singh and head constable as Amandeep Singh.

Giving details of the case, he said that traffic cop Harjinder Singh of Jabowal village deployed at Phagwara had lodged a complaint against the duo.

The complainant told police that the head constable had called him up, assuring his transfer to Sultanpur Lodhi near his village, the SP said.

The head constable claimed before the complainant that he had links with police high ups, thus he was capable of securing the favour of transfer, he said.

Amandeep Singh demanded Rs 10,000 for it, he said.

He sent Manjinder Singh to the complainant for receiving the amount, the SP said.

He allegedly threatened to get the complainant transferred to Mansa district, a far-off place from complainant’s village, in case the amount was not delivered to the cop, he said.

He also lied to complainant about having secured his transfer with the help of his “contacts” with police high-ups, Gill said.

The complainant brought it to the notice of traffic incharge Inspector Ranjit Kumar, who caught the constable on the spot when the latter had come to get the amount and handed him over to the city police, said SP.

A case was registered against the duo at local city police station under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 384(punishment for extortion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), said SP.
