Guwahati, Mar 14 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today assured representatives of six communities that he would take up with the Centre the issue of granting Scheduled Tribe status to them.Also Read - Himanta Biswa Sarma Elected as Assam Chief Minister, To Take Oath at 12 Noon Tomorrow

Sonowal told the representatives of the communities – Moran, Muttock, Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia and Tea Tribes – that his government has accorded importance to their demands. Also Read - Will Himanta Sarma Outplay Sonowal to Become Assam CM? Crucial Decision Today

“Close on the heels of the earlier stand for endorsing demands of the six communities for ST status, government is also committed to push the demand for early disposal of the issue,” the CM said. Also Read - NDA is Considering Granting ST Status to 6 Communities: Modi in Assam

He also mooted the idea of setting up of a committee consisting of representatives of the communities to ensure seamless communication.
