“The state government has decided to include coconut palm as tree in the Goa, Daman and Diu (Preservation of) Trees Act, 1984 to regulate felling of coconut trees,” reads a cabinet note, a copy of which was given to the media.

The Goa Forward Party (GFP), an alliance partner in the government, had included reclassifying coconut as a tree as a part of the Common Minimum Program adopted by the coalition government.

The amendment to the Trees Act would be ratified during the ongoing state Assembly session.

The then Laxmikant parsekar-led government had classified Coconut as a palm due to which it was prone to indiscriminate felling.

The GFP had made reclassification of Coconut tree as a part of their election manifesto.
