Patna, Jul 26 (PTI) Bihar Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi today invoked Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee to stress that universities should always remember its importance in reconstruction of the country.
He quoted from a speech by Mookerjee when he was vice-chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of only 33 years to highlight the role of universities in the nation building.
Tripathi, who holds additional charge of Bihar along with West Bengal, was speaking at the convocation of Nalanda Open University here.
“Indian universities should always remember their importance as a living organ in the reconstruction of the nation. They should be ready for fullfilment of both physical and spiritual aims,” he said quoting Mookerjee.
He had said that universities have the leading role in keeping the highest tradition intact.
The Governor praised the rich history of Bihar and referred to the glorious days of Nalanda and Vikramshila universities.
He spoke about Mahatama Gandhi launching his freedom movement against British rule from Champaran in Bihar and contributions of first President Rajendra Prasad and Sachidanand Sinha, a member of Constitution draft committee.
Video message of Union HRD minister Prakash Javedkar was shown during the function.
The governor, who is also the chancellor of the university, honoured students winning gold medal in different subjects.
