Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 8 (PTI) Kerala today asked neighbouring Tamil Nadu to release 400 cusecs of water to the state in accordance with the water sharing agreement under the Parabikulam-Aliyar project till February 15.

State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart K Palaniswami pointed out that farmers of the Chittor region at Palakkad, who depend mainly on the release of water under the PAP pact, were in distress due to the non-release of water as per the agreement.

As per the bilateral pact, Chittoor river basin has to receive 400 cusecs water till February 15.

But, Tamil Nadu officials were not ready to release water, Vijayan said.

Kerala received only 131 cusecs on February 6 and 91 cusecs on Februry 7. Only 32 cusecs water was released today till eight in the morning, it was pointed out.

“This type of pact violation and shortage in water is causing anxiety,” Vijayan said and sought the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s intervention to ensure that Kerala got 400 cusecs water as per the agreement.
