Metro services crawl on Violet Line due to safety inspection

New Delhi, May 23 (PTI) Services on Delhi Metro’s Violet Line were severely affected today due to the safety inspection of the upcoming stretch between ITO and Kashmere Gate stations.

Currently, trains operate between Faridabad’s Escorts Mujesar and ITO on the line. However, due to the inspection, Mandi House station was used as the terminal station of the route for some time.

“In view of the confirmatory run of CMRS (Commission for Railway Safety) between ITO to Kashmere Gate section, some trains were reversed from Mandi House instead of ITO between 3.15 pm and 4 pm,” a metro official said.

The restriction triggered a cascading effect leading to slowing down of services along the entire 36-km-long corridor.

Meanwhile, the two-day safety inspection of the 5.17 km- long-extension, has ended, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said.

Following CMRS clearance of the extension, with three stations Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and Red Fort, metro will make a major foray into old Delhi.

Once the section is launched, residents of old Delhi, made up of areas in and around the Mughal seat of power ‘Shahjahanabad’, will have direct access to commercial centres such as Connaught Place, Janpath, offices in Central Secretariat, and the satellite town of Faridabad.

‘Shahjahanabad’, with the Red Fort as its crowning glory, was founded by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the mid 17th century.
