Chandigarh, Sep 28 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today met a delegation of National Students Union of India (NSUI) from Panjab University and assured them full government support over their hostel and scholarship concerns.
The chief minister assured them of full government support for the establishment of new hostels and a scholarship for students from the economically weaker sections.
“He assured them he would discuss with the university Chancellor and Vice Chancellor the issues of hostels and scholarship,” an official release said.
The assurance came after the delegation told Amarinder about the 5,000 students who were residing in private roomsoutside the university due to the lack of accomodation in hostel.
The students requested the chief minister to provide an exclusive grant for construction of new hostels as the varsity had a chunk of land available near its campus.
The delegation also urged Amarinder to start a scholarship for students from the economically weaker sections.
During the meeting, the chief minister also congratulated the student body for its performance in the recent student union elections in the university.
NSUI had won three out of the four key posts of the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) which had taken place on September 7.
The delegation was led by President Jashan Kamboj, General Secretary Vani Sood and Executive President Pargat Singh Brar of the NSUI, a student wing of Congress, said an official release here.
