Kanpur, Jun 29 (PTI) A new variety of groundnut that can be grown in summers has been developed by agro-scientists of the UGC-affiliated Chandra Shekhar Azad Agriculture Technology University (CSA) here.

“The new variety of groundnut can be sown after harvesting pea, potato and mustard during summers,” CSA scientist Jitendra Singh said here.

He said the summer variety of groundnut could be harvested just three months after it is sown. “It can be sown in March and can be harvested in June,” he said.

“Now people will not have to consume stored groundnuts grown during the winter season. They will now relish the taste of fresh groundnuts even during the summers,” he said.

Singh said that in Uttar Pradesh, the summer variety of groundnut could be sown in Kanpur, Fatehpur, Allahabad and Kaushambi areas which are known as the potato belt.

It can be sown in other parts of the country as well, he said.

Singh claimed that with an investment of Rs 30,000 per hectare, a grower can earn up to Rs 75,000.

Moreover, the summer variety of the groundnut crop is disease-free as pests cannot attack the crop because of high temperature in the atmosphere, he added.
