Bhawanipatna (Odisha), Apr 13 (PTI) At least two persons were killed and 26 injured, five of them seriously, when a bus carrying them fell off a bridge and plunged into a 30-feet gorge in Kalahandi district today, the police said.
The bus from Bhubaneswar was on its way to Sinapali with around 50 passengers when it fell into the gorge from Lal Pulia bridge on the national highway near here apparently after losing control, they said.
Soon after the mishap, local volunteers as well as fire brigade and police personnel launched an operation to rescue the victims, they said.
The conductor of the bus Kalpataru Panda (45) from Kuakhia of Jajpur district and a 2-year-old girl child, Niharika Sahu Jarka, Jajpur district died in the accident, police said.
The injured persons, including the driver and helper of the bus, were admitted to the government hospital at Bhawanipatna.
Three of them were later shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla and two others to SCB Medical College and hospital in Cuttack as their condition deteriorated, they added.
