Ghaziabad, Jul 21 (PTI) Police have arrested a wanted criminal after a brief encounter in Kamla Nehru Nagar in Kavinagar police station area here.
Akash Tomar, SP, City, said on a tip-off, the police intercepted two suspects on a bike, last night.
But they did not stop and fired upon the police party and in turn the police retaliated due to which their motorcycle slipped on the muddy road.
Taking advantage of darkness one of them managed to flee from the spot while the other was nabbed.
Upon searching his belongings, police recovered one country made pistol of .32 bore and three live cartridges and Rs 35,000 in cash.
He has been identified as Deepak Sharma of District Muzaffarnagar and an active member of Neeraj gang, who was posted as constable in CISF at Andhra Pradesh and he used give shelter to criminals.
He confessed to a robbery in Andhra Pradesh in which he along with his accomplices had looted Rs 28 lakh in 2011. In this case Andhra police had declared a reward of Rs 25,000 for Deepak.
He told the police that six members of his gang were arrested by Andhra police and three are still at large, the officer said.
