In 2012, although the Indian National Congress (INC) managed to get 18 corporators, the allied BJP-Shiv Sena managed to get 26 corporators, out of which 18 were from BJP and 8 were from the Shiv Sena. The nationalist Congress Party, also known as the NCP, managed to get 5 seats and hence had 5 corporators, and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) got only 1 corporator in Akola. Apart from the candidates backed by political parties, there were 11 independent corporators elected.
The recent spat in the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has brewed many speculations regarding which way the election shall sway this year, as looking at the Akola Municipal Corporation result of 2012, one can clearly see, the Shiv Sena as a weaker party than BJP, or for that matter the Congress. However, the mudslinging tactic of both the BJP and the Shiv Sena, might actually be detrimental for both. In the wake of this election season, when the BJP is also actively contesting Assembly elections in 5 states of the country, some have been speculating that Shiv Sena might actually have an edge over the BJP.
51.62 per cent polling was recorded in the elections for Akola Municipal Corporations held on February 21. India.com would be updating the results based upon updates and trends. The final tally of elected corporators is expected to be issued by State Election Commission later in the day.
