India-Bangladesh relations: Since the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus has been ruling Bangladesh, India-Bangladesh relations have only gone downhill. Meanwhile, the interim government has made its ties with Pakistan closer, thus, posing a diplomatic issue for India. Further, in a move that could escalate the tensions between India and Bangladesh, a high-level delegation of the Pakistani Army reached Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Here are all the details about the delegation visit and why it can be a point of concern for India.
According to media reports, four senior officers of the Pakistani Army, including, Major General Shahid Afsar, Brigadier General Alam Amir Awan, Brigadier General Muhammad Asim, and Lieutenant Colonel Usman Latif Khalid arrived in Dhaka to meet the officials from Bangladesh on January 21, 2025.
The increasing camaraderie between Bangladesh and Pakistan has the potential to alter the geopolitical landscape of South Asia. On one side, the political instability in Bangladesh raises concerns regarding its democratic prospects, while on the other side, the strengthening ties with Pakistan may pose a significant political challenge for India. Consequently, the meeting between Pakistan Army officials and Bangladesh officials might pose a danger for India in the coming months.
At least 22 people, including police officers and security personnel, were injured in clashes between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Bangladesh’s Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira District on Wednesday, despite Section 144 being imposed by authorities, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, the conflict occurred in the Ismailpur area of Shyamnagar after tensions escalated between the two groups. The clash followed the organisation of a rally by the leaders of the newly formed Shyamnagar BNP committee, which prompted members of the dissolved committee to take measures to prevent the event. Fearing further violence, the Upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the area.
However, when the procession led by Solaiman Kabir, former acting general secretary of the Upazila BNP, was heading toward Shyamnagar town, a stick was thrown, sparking a clash between the two factions, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.
