Mumbai, Jan 22: Search engine giant Google is all set to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity at railway stations in India. Passengers will be able to use Google’s high-speed WiFi at Mumbai Central railway station from today onwards. The free WiFi connectivity at Mumbai Central station is a part of Google’s grand project of free Wi-Fi connectivity at railway stations.
The RailTel Corporation will install Wi-Fi hotspots at 400 stations in India with Google. The project is aimed at to make internet accessible to one crore passengers at 100 busiest railway stations in India by mid-2016. Later, it will be expanded to 300 other stations. Google’s India-born CEO Sundar Pichai announced Wi-Fi project after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Passengers using Mumbai Central railway station will have free Wi-Fi for the first 30 minutes over a 24-hour period. Customers will have to pay for the service if they use it beyond 30 minutes. The high-speech Wi-Fi will enable users to stream HD quality video and to download movies in just four minutes.

In December last year, Sundar Pichai visited Indian and gave a January deadline for the facility at the first station. “Even with just the first 100 stations online, this project will make Wi-Fi available for the more than 10 million people who pass through every day. This will rank it as the largest public Wi-Fi project in India, and among the largest in the world, by number of potential users,” wrote Pichai on Google’s official blog.
