Kolkata, Mar 31: At least 10 people have been killed and many feared trapped after an under-construction flyover collapsed in Kolkata. According to initial reports, the Vivekanand bridge, which was being built at Badabazar, a busy area in central Kolkata near the famous Ganesh Talkies, collapsed at around 12:47 PM. There are reports that 10 people have been killed due to the accident and many have trapped under debris. The death toll may rise.
The rescue operation is under-way to save those who are trapped under the debris. The construction of the Vivekanad flyover has been delayed six times. The bridge was supposed to have been completed three years ago. The collapse of the bridge led to panic in the locality with residents feeling scared and crying. Police has urged people to control their panic and do not create hassles in the arrival of rescue operation squads in the area.
“I think atleast 150 people are under the debris,” said an eye-witness after the flyover collapsed. “Cement & concrete was poured in y’day only, it suddenly collapsed today,” said another local. Civilians were seen assisting the police and rescue team in the rescue operation. The fire brigade unit is taking efforts to bring out dozens of workers who are trapped beneath the debris. One person was extracted out by the rescue team and immediately rushed to the hospital.
