The depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestward with a speed of 6 kmph, which will intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday morning, the India Meteorological Department said. It will cross north Odisha and the West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 and the morning of October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph.
Cyclone Dana is predicted to make landfall between Puri and Sagar Island in the early hours of October 25, bringing wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts possibly reaching 120 kmph.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has also launched a 24×7 control room of its own in view of the cyclonic storm. The Central Control Room of CMO Buildings and KMC will be active for 24 hours from 2:00 pm onwards on October 23 up to October 26 till the cyclonic effect subsides, officials said.
“As per the IMD (India Meteorological Department), the storm could turn into a severe cyclone and make landfall on 25th early morning. Wind can gust to 120 kmph. East Midnapore could be affected along with North and South 24th Parganas, and Kolkata as well due to heavy rainfall. Our government is ready to tackle the issue. We have a 24×7 control room”, the Chief Minister told reporters.
Indian Mereological Department (IMD) director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra has said that the cyclone could impact the eastern coast, from Puri to West Bengal.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the government was ready to tackle the issue and was taking care of the situation through a 24×7 control room.
The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has issued orders putting seven districts in the state on high alert in the wake of the growing concerns around cyclone Dana.
