New Delhi: The National Capital, currently grappling with the dual challenges of an unprecedented heatwave and a severe water crisis, faced yet another setback on Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 2:11 pm, a power outage struck the city’s northern region following a fire at the Mandola power grid in Uttar Pradesh.
The Mandola power grid supplies 1,500 megawatts of electricity to the national capital. The temperature in the city this afternoon hovered around 42 degrees Celsius.
“There has been a major power cut in many parts of Delhi since 2:11 PM today. A power grid in Mandola, UP, which supplies 1,500 MW of electricity to Delhi, has caught fire. We are linking it to our other power sources,” Delhi’s Power Minister Atishi said.
“I will seek an appointment with the new Union Power Minister today since the country’s power transmission is run by the central government,” she said.
There is power outage in many parts of Delhi from 2:11pm. This is due to a fire at sub-station of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in Mandola, UP. Delhi receives 1200 MW of power from the Mandola sub-station, and therefore many parts of Delhi have been affected.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader, criticising the Centre over the lapse, said, “It is worrying that the national-level power infrastructure has come to a standstill today. The failure of the national grid in the country’s capital is quite worrying. There was no power cut even when Delhi’s peak power demand reached 8,000 MW. This power cut happened due to the failure of the national infrastructure.”
The AAP on Monday again accused the BJP government in Haryana of negative politics and stopping water supply in the Yamuna leading to a severe shortage in the national capital.
AAP’s chief national spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar claimed during a press conference that 137 cusecs released by Himachal Pradesh following a Supreme Court order had yet to reach Delhi.
The BJP government in Haryana has not only stopped Delhi’s water from Himachal Pradesh but also reduced the national capital’s share of 1,050 cusecs, according to an agreement between the two states, by 200 cusecs, she claimed.
Kakkar said the Delhi government will put all these issues before the Supreme Court.
The apex court on June 6 directed the Himachal Pradesh government to release 137 cusecs of surplus water available with it for Delhi and asked Haryana to facilitate the flow of this water so that it reaches the national capital.
