New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal is under judicial custody and is currently at the Tihar Jail, where he will remain till April 15, 2024 as per the latest order. The Delhi Chief Minister was arrested on March 21, 2024 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi Excise Policy Case, after he avoided multiple summons by the probe agency. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief filed a plea against his arrest first in the Delhi High Court where it was rejected; he then moved the Supreme Court of India and despite an appeal for an urgent hearing, the plea was not heard because of a court holiday. On one hand, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has been claiming that Arvind Kejriwal is being ‘tortured’ in jail, on the other hand, the date for the latter’s hearing in Supreme Court has been set. Here’s all the latest updates regarding Arvind Kejriwal Arrest, that you must know…

SC To Hear Kejriwal’s Plea Against Arrest On This Date

As mentioned earlier, the date for the hearing of the plea filed by Arvind Kejriwal, challenging his arrest, has been set. The Supreme Court will hear on April 15 the plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) and his subsequent remand in the excise policy case. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta will hear the matter. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kejriwal approached the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court judgement that dismissed his plea against arrest by the ED and his subsequent remand in the excise policy case.

While filing an appeal in the apex court, he contended that his arrest after the announcement of the general elections was “motivated by extraneous considerations.” The appeal stated that the sitting Chief Minister had been arrested in a “motivated manner” in the middle of the election cycle, especially after the declaration of the schedule of the Lok Sabha election in 2024.

Arvind Kejriwal Being ‘Tortured’ In Jail: Sanjay Singh

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh hit out at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday, alleging that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is being “tortured” inside the Tihar jail at the behest of the central government. The AAP leader also said that the jail administration carried out “inhuman” behaviour and refused to allow Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, to meet him in person. Speaking at a press conference in the national capital, Sanjay Singh said, “Elected thrice with an overwhelming majority, the Chief Minister of 2 crore people in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, is being ‘tortured,’ at the behest of the Government of India, at the behest of the Prime Minister of the country.”

“Efforts are being made to break his morale and every now and then an attempt is being made to destroy even the minimum rights and facilities available to anyone and all this is being done openly,” he said. Adding further, Sanjay Singh said, “The information I want to give you today may have come for the first time in the history of Tihar Jail. It is an obvious matter, the officials in any administration are pawns who work under the instructions of the higher-ups.”

‘Why Was Such Inhuman Behaviour Meted Out Towards Him?’

“Now, let me tell you about the meeting permit for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at Tihar. According to the jail manual and rules of the jail, under 602 and 605, anyone can have a face-to-face meeting in the jail,” he said. “However, when Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, whom everybody knows is at the present time worried and tensed, and while his parents, both of whom are ill, came to meet him at the jail, she was told that she could not meet him face-to-face or in a room but rather through a window,” he added.

He further questioned and said, “Why was such inhuman behaviour meted out towards him? This inhuman act has been done just to humiliate and discourage Arvind Kejriwal,” he claimed. “I am saying with full responsibility that even the dreaded criminals are allowed to meet in the barrack, but a three-time CM of Delhi is allowed to meet his wife through a window with a glass in between,” said the AAP leader.

Arvind Kejriwal, who is behind the bars for almost a fortnight, is discharging his duties as the Delhi Chief Minister from prison and has been filing pleas to challenged his arrest. His political party, AAP has been protesting against the same and has vouched to get their chief out.
