Arvind Kejriwal Bail: In a major relief for Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the ongoing Lok Sabha Election 2024, the Supreme Court Friday granted a 21-day interim bail to the Delhi Chief Minister in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, albeit with some conditions. The apex court has directed the AAP supremo to surrender to the Enforcement Directorate after the end of his bail period on June 2.

Here’s what the Supreme Court said while granting bail to Arvind Kejriwal:

  • The top court observed that granting interim bail for 21 days to Arvind Kejriwal will not make much of a difference.
  • The Supreme Court passed an interim order, granting interim bail to Kejriwal till June 1.
  • Kejriwal will surrender on June 2, the order said.
  • While passing the bail order, the top court observed that the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) ws registered by the ED in August 2022 but Kejriwal was only arrested on March 21 this year.
  • The court noted that Kejriwal was out there for one-and-a-half-years and could have been arrested earlier or after (Lok Sabha polls). “But that did not happen.”
  • The bail conditions will be similar to those for AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh who was granted bail last month.

On Tuesday, the bench had hinted interim bail to Kejriwal to enable him to campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The ED had opposed his bail, arguing that there can’t be any deviation only because Kejriwal is Chief Minister and asked if the Supreme Court is carving out exceptions for politicians.
