Delhi Airport Roof Collapse: Following the roof collapse at Terminal 1 of the Delhi Airport which left one person dead and six others injured, the airport’s operator, DIAL, Friday said the primary cause of the mishap seems to be incessant heavy rains in the national capital, adding that it has set up a technical committee to probe the incident.

The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates the Delhi Airport, said a canopy at the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1 (T1) partially collapsed on early Friday morning due to nightlong heavy rainfall and strong winds in the city.

The incident took place at around 5 AM on Friday, crushing a cab driver driver to death and leaving at least six other people injured.

In a statement, DIAL asserted that heavy rains and winds were deemed as the primary cause of the collapse.

“While the cause for the collapse is being assessed, the primary cause seems to be the continued heavy rainfall over the past few hours,” it said, adding that it has set up a technical committee to investigate the cause of the incident and will give the report as soon as possible.

DIAL said it is working with all relevant agencies, including Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation (BCAS), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Delhi Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to assess the situation and restore operations.

Meanwhile, flight operations were suspended at Terminal 1 following the incident. The Terminal is used for domestic flights operated by IndiGo and SpiceJet.
