Delhi Heatwave: The record-breaking summer heat in Delhi has sent power demand in the national capital soaring to an all-time high of 8,302 MW. According to officials, this is the first time in the city’s history that peak power demand has crossed the 8,300-MW mark.

Discom officials said power distribution companies had estimated the power demand to peak at 8,200 MW this summer, however, this demand has gone way beyond estimation due to prolonged spell of extreme heat which has crippled normal life in the capital city since past few weeks.

On Wednesday afternoon, the peak power demand in the city reached 8,302 MW at 15:36:32 hours, beating the previous high of 8,000 MW, recorded earlier this month on May 22, State Load Dispatch Centre, Delhi said in a statement.

Delhi reels under record-breaking heatwave

Delhi has been braving a prolonged spell of extreme heatwave conditions with the maximum day temperatures in many parts including Najafgarh, Mungeshpur and Narela touching almost 50 degrees Celsius.

On Wednesday, the national capital sweltered under extreme heat as the maximum temperature reached an alarming 52.3 degrees Celsius, the highest ever temperature recorded in the city.

Officials said a maximum temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius, the highest ever in the capital city, was logged in Mungeshpur locality of northwest Delhi on Wednesday, breaching the previous high of 49.9 degrees Celsius, recorded a day earlier on Tuesday.

As per data posted on the IMD website, Mungeshpur area logged a blistering 52.3 degrees Celsius at 4.14 PM on Wednesday, which is the highest temperature ever recorded in the capital city’s history so far.

Weather officials have said the reason for the crippling heat are the hot and humid winds blowing from nearby Rajasthan.
