New Delhi: The national capital woke up to another freezing morning as North India continues to reel under chilling cold wave conditions, accompanied by dense fog. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for dense fog on Saturday in Delhi and adjoining areas. According to the weather department, the skies are expected to be clear today with dense to very dense fog during the early hours. Cold to severe cold day conditions are expected to be witnessed at isolated places in Delhi, with maximum and minimum temperatures to settle around 15 and 7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, stated a marginal surge in the daytime temperature is expected next week. “Mornings and evenings in Delhi will be cold. However, there will be relief during the daytime due to sunlight,” he said. Srivastava underlined that no significant change in Delhi’s weather conditions is expected in January so far.

Notably, the residents of Delhi-NCR region got a respite on January 7 and 8, due to a passing western disturbance. However, the relief was short-lived as freezing cold wave conditions returned from January 9.

“Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to prevail over North India during the next 5 days. Cold day to severe cold day conditions continue to prevail over North India during the next 3 days,” according to the forecast by the IMD.

The weather department further stated that cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are expected to continue over Northwest India for the next 3 days.

“Cold day to severe cold day conditions at a few places in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at a few places in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and at isolated places in Himanchal Pradesh. Ground frost at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” it added.

Dence fog in the early morning has significantly impacted road, rail, and air traffic over the past several days. Today, as many as 11 trains to Delhi from various parts of the country are running late due to dense fog conditions.

Several flight operations were also delayed at IGI airport due to low visibility amid the fog

Today, the national capital recorded the nighttime temperature at 6 degrees Celsius and it is expected to remain below 10 degrees Celsius for the next few days.

On Friday, as many as 22 trains were delayed, and several flight operations were disrupted and diverted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport due to low visibility amid the fog.

Cold day to severe cold day condition is expected to continue over North India for the next two days (until Jan 21) before gradually decreasing in intensity. IMD has also predicted the continuation of cold wave to severe cold wave conditions over the plains of Northwest India during the next two days.
