Delhi Water Crisis Latest News: At a time when heatwave is sweeping across North India with temperature rising above 40 degrees Celsius, a new crisis has loomed large in Delhi as the city is facing water shortage in several areas. The water crisis in Delhi is mainly caused by the depleting water level in the Yamuna river. With this new water crisis, the residents in the city expressed concern amid continuous power outages and rising temperatures.
In the meantime, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said the water level in the Yamuna ricer plummeted over the past few days, and the situation is getting worse with power failures at treatment facilities. The DJB said the water utility was able to supply only 977.79 million gallons per day (mgd) of water on Tuesday — 22.21 mgd lower than the target of 1000 mgd.
The Wazirabad barrage in north Delhi is an important area where raw water is lifted for Wazirabad and Chandrawal treatment plants, and the new crisis has affected the areas that are fed by these plants.
The DJB said the localities in north, central, and southwest Delhi — Kamla Nagar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, New Rajinder Nagar, Baljeet Nagar, Govindpuri, Tughlaqabad, Punjabi Bagh, and Moolchand — are likely to be impacted by the drop in water supply.
However, as per the DJB’s summer action plan, the targeted production of the Wazirabad plant is 134 mgd and of the Haiderpur plant is 241 mgd. However, the DJB said that the Wazirabad facility supplied 125.52 mgd on Monday and 122.40 mgd on Tuesday.
In general, the normal level in the pondage area of the Wazirabad plant is considered to be 674.50 feet, and the level has dropped, officials did not disclose the current level.
In the meantime, the AAP and the BJP waged a war of words over the water crisis in the city. Delhi Minister Atishi alleged the BJP has hatched a “new conspiracy” to target AAP and through its Haryana government has stopped water supply to the national capital.
Atishi said the BJP has been hatching conspiracies to target AAP ever since the Lok Sabha polls were announced.
“Within five days of the announcement of Lok Sabha polls, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested so that the AAP could not campaign in the polls. After he came out on interim bail, they used the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal to frame him but even that plan did not work,” Atishi said.
