US President-elect Donald Trump is set to take the oath of office in January 2025. He has begun assembling a new team to serve for the next four years, appointing Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Both Ramaswamy and Musk will use their experience to eliminate inefficiencies in the $6.5 trillion annual federal spending by July 4, 2026. Trump has compared the new department to the ‘Manhattan Project.’
Trump said that the department is necessary to save the America movement and he can see it as the ‘Manhattan Project.’
What was the Manhattan project?
The Manhattan Project was the first research and development program aimed at creating the atomic bomb. The United Kingdom and Canada also supported the United States in this effort. The project took place from 1942 to 1946.
The idea for the Manhattan Project originated from a research paper published in a German journal, which discussed nuclear fission and was based on Einstein’s formula. Later, American scientists and defense advisors began planning the development of an atomic bomb.
In 1942, work began on developing an atomic bomb in a building on the 18th floor of Manhattan’s Broadway. Leslie Richard Groves, who had overseen the construction of the Pentagon, arranged for 1,200 tons of uranium. However, they lacked the scientists needed to develop the bomb. Groves then called on Julius Robert Oppenheimer to lead the project.
The atomic bomb laboratory was established at Los Alamos, where 1,000 scientists worked on the project and successfully developed the bomb in 1945.
