New Delhi: Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important festivals in Islam, celebrated at the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. In India, preparations for the festival are in full swing, as Eid symbolizes “the festival of breaking the fast.” It also marks the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. In India, Ramadan started on March 2 with the sighting of the moon, and the month of Ramadan will end only after seeing the Shawwal moon and Eid will be celebrated. According to the reports, Eid is likely to be celebrated on March 30 or March 31 in India this year. However, Ramadan is of 30 days, so this year Eid will be celebrated on April 1, 2025. The probability is that the moon will be seen on March 30 and Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
Eid means “the festival of breaking the fast.” It also marks the start of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. In India, it is also known as Meethi Eid.
According to the Islamic calendar, Eid is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, which is also the next month of Ramadan.
One of the most sacred acts on this day in the preparation for Eid is paying Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana), which must be done before the Eid prayer and before the end of Ramadan.
Eid-ul-Fitr symbolizes gratitude, happiness and prosperity for Muslims.

Kuwait has introduced flexible holiday plans—three days off if Eid falls on March 30, and an extended nine-day break if it falls on March 31.
The UAE has confirmed a three-day holiday from Shawwal 1 to 3, with an additional day off if Ramadan lasts 30 days.
Saudi Arabia has declared a four-day break from March 30 to April 2, with work resuming on April 3.
The Saudi Supreme Court and Moon Sighting Committees in the Middle East and West, will look for the crescent moon of Shawwal after the maghrib prayers.
