Punjab News: Almost a month after the tragic death of a 10-year-old girl In Punjab’s Patiala, who died after after allegedly consuming her birthday cake, health officials have found a high-concentration of synthetic sweetener, saccharin, in the samples of cakes taken from the bakery which had supplied the cake for the deceased girl’s birthday.

According to officials, out of four cake samples taken for analysis from the Patiala bakery, two were found to contain a high concentration of saccharin, an artificial sweetener often used as a substitute for sugar, especially by diabetics.

According to doctors, saccharin is perfectly fine to use in small quantities, but a higher concentration of the synthetic sweetener can result in stomach troubles.

It is not clear yet if the girl, Manvi, died due to eating the cake as the forensic report of the same has not come out yet. A senior health official said it is unclear if the cake eaten by Manvi and her sister was contaminated, however, samples of other cakes taken from the same bakery were found to contain a high concentration of artificial sweeteners.

Punjab girl dies after eating her birthday cake

On March 24, 10-year-old Manvi, a resident of Aman Nagar in Patiala district of Punjab, died after eating her birthday cake. As per the family’s complaint, Manvi celebrated her birthday on March 24 and ate the cake which they had ordered via an online food delivery app.

In their complaint, the family stated that Manvi went to sleep after consuming the cake at her birthday party but suddenly woke up and asked for water, before going back to bed.

Later, when the family members went to check on Manvi, they found her lying unconscious and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

“It was our daughter’s birthday and we had ordered a cake from a local bakery shop through an online food delivery application. She ate it after the celebration, after which her health started deteriorating. She complained of feeling thirsty at midnight and asked for water.

But around 3-4 am, her body became cold, and we took her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. We want strict action to be taken against the bakery,” Manvi’s grandfather, Harvansh Lal, told news agency ANI.

Lal alleged that other members of the family who ate the cake also fell ill.

Following the family’s complaint, police had registered a case against the bakery owner and sent samples of the cake for forensic testing.
