IMD Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunder and lightning in Goa, sounding a ‘yellow’ alert in the coastal state for May 12-13. In a statement, IMD said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to strike at isolated places in the state.
“Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and winds gushing to 30-40 kilometres per hour are very likely at isolated places on May 12-13,” the IMD statement said.
Meanwhile, the weather agency said maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in the state on Saturday were 34 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Meanwhile, heavy rains, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms, have been predicted in parts of Andhra Pradesh on election day on May 13 (Monday).
The Meteorological Department said thunderstorms and gusty winds ranging up to a speed of 50 km per hour (kmph) in parts of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema.
Similar weather has been predicted for three more days from May 14.
“A cyclonic circulation lies over south interior Karnataka and neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level,” said the Meteorological Department in a release.
Further, it observed that lower tropospheric southerly and south westerly winds are prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
Mid-summer showers cooled down Vijayawada, Undavalli, Tadepalli and other places in the vicinity today. According to the Met Department, Amaravati witnessed 15 mm rainfall today.
In Uttarakhand, the local MeT department Sunday issued an orange alert for five districts of Uttarakhand warning of thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and hail in isolated places.
Gusty winds at the speed of 40-50 km per hour are also predicted in these districts, which include Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, the MeT office said.
A yellow alert has also been issued for the rest of the districts during the period, it said, adding the administration should take all precautionary measures to ensure safety of people.
The lightning might cause damage to property, humans and livestock in isolated places, the MeT office said.
It added that minor damages to ‘kuccha’ houses and insecure structures could also be caused in these five districts.
The MeT office has advised people to stay away from all objects that conduct electricity during thunderstorms and lightning and to also avoid keeping their livestock outdoors.
People are advised to be cautious and take shelter in safe places and ‘pucca’ houses during thunderstorms and lightning, it said.
The weather office also advised people against taking shelter under trees during a thunderstorm and asked them to park their vehicles in safe places.
