Kottayam, April 24: Ahead of nationwide sparking debates about women must be given equal opportunity to worship and visit religious places, a 1000-year old Juma Masjid in Kerala has opened up its door for women. The decision was taken by the trustees and board members of the mosque when officials at Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai closed its door to women stating that they can’t be allowed to enter there. The Juma Masjid (mosque) is located at Thazhathangadi in Kerala’s Kottayam district and is famous among Muslim worshippers.
The 1000-year old mosque is believed to be among the mosques build by eight century religious preacher Malik bin Dinar from Arabia.
The women in Muslim community, especially in India are not allowed to enter the mosque of dargah (shrine). The mosque reportedly got opened for women after the locals living in Kottayam district appealed for it. The mosque also houses some of the centuries-old Islamic sundial. Sacred writing from the Quran can also be seen embossed in wood, richly carved facades and the stunning Malikappuram are the other objects that can be seen inside the mosque.
The authorities opened the door of mosque for women on condition that they must enter there in the right attire. However two days have been decided by the community.
Moulauddeen, Chief Imam of mosque reportedly said, “The right to enter the mosque do not mean right to pray”. He further said that there are several people in Kerala who are not happy with their decision. However further decision will be taken by the internal committee of mosque.
