10th Day of Lockdown: With 478 Cases in 24 Hours, India Records Highest Spike; Jamaat Event Blamed

New Delhi: India witnessed the highest spike ever in the number of the active coronavirus cases as a total of 478 cases were reported on Friday from all across the country. The number of total cases now stands at 2547, while the death toll reached 62.

The Tablighi Jamaat meet held early in March in the headquarters in Nizamuddin is being blamed for the sudden spike. At least 647 positive cases reported in the last two days have links with the Congregation. The cases have been traced to Assam, Delhi, Assam, Delhi, Himachal, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar. Out of the 12 deaths reported in the last 24 hours some are related to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation.

Statewise Figures

With 67 persons diagnosed for COVID-19 on Friday, the number of coronavirus positive cases in Maharashtra has gone up to 490, health officials said.

The cases in Karnataka have risen to 124, Madhya Pradesh has reported 104 cases so far, Gujarat 95 while Jammu and Kashmir has 75 positive patients.

The number of cases has risen to 63 in West Bengal. Haryana has reported 49 cases of COVID-19 so far followed by Punjab with 48 cases.

Bihar has 29 cases, Chandigarh 18, Assam 16 and Ladakh has reported 14 cases so far.

Ten cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar IslandsUttarakhand has reported 10 cases while Chhattisgarh has nine positive patients.

Goa and Himachal Pradesh have have reported six coronavirus cases each. Odisha and Puducherry have five cases each. Jhakhand and Manipur have reported two cases each while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a case each.

In Delhi, the total number of coronavirus cases mounted to nearly 386, with 93 fresh cases and two deaths being reported in a day. The tally of cases includes 259 people who took part in a religious congregation in the Nizamuddin area.
