New Delhi, June 30:After successfully making electoral inroads into the community which was considered a traditional stronghold of the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has announced the formation of SIT (Special Investigation Team) to probe the causalities suffered in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The decision came from chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday after a heated session of the Delhi legislative assembly where the party successfully passed the amendments to the VAT bill. Ordering a fair probe in the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom was one of the agenda of AAP. Kejriwal in his previous stint as the chief minister had announced the formation of SIT. However, after he had quit the government in haste, the SIT could not progress further, as Delhi was placed without an elected government for a year.

“We will co-operate fully with the Centre on this, will keep providing help to the victims of ’84 riots,” said Kejriwal. Indicating his government’s intention of providing justice to the affected community, Kejriwal said, “We will provide lawyers to the victims of the riots”.

The 1984 riots is alleged to be a anti-Sikh pogrom organized by some members of the Congress family in retaliation to the death of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who was gunned down by her personal bodyguards who were Sikhs.
