Mumbai, Apr 18: Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Takla died on Wednesday in custody. Tahir was taken to the Sasoon hospital after he complained of chest pain and breathlessness. He died in the hospital this morning. Tahir was convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and was awarded death sentence by the TADA court last year. He was charged with helping the accused travel to Pakistan via Dubai for training in handling arms and ammunition.

The Supreme Court had in December stayed the execution of Tahir’s death sentence. He was convicted for conspiring, facilitating and knowingly commissioning acts of terror.

Taher grew up with Dawood Ibrahim and his brothers and had a predominant role in the blasts. He allegedly motivated associates to arrange men from Mumbai for training in handling of arms and ammunition in Pakistan.

The TADA court had said that Tahir’s role in the conspiracy was more serious than that of Yakub Memon.
