Priyanka Chopra is making waves in U.S. media, which is no small feat considering the actress is s a crossover star. Years after she became one of Bollywood’s most prolific talents, she managed to establish herself as a bona fide television star thanks to her starring role in the primetime drama “Quantico.”
Chopra also happens to be a talented singer and dancer – and when we consider that in light of the fact that she’s spoken out powerfully in favor of colorblind casting. As if all that weren’t enough, she also has the enviable ability to completely own a red carpet moment – and that’s why Chopra is one of the women we look to for style inspiration.
These are five style lessons we learned from Chopra. They’re great pointers for any woman – but especially relevant for South Asian ladies.
1. Brown girls can wear white
If you’re a South Asian woman, you may have been told to avoid white clothing. Women of South Asian and Middle Eastern descent tend to have yellow undertones in their complexions, and some people say these tones look washed out or ashy against pure white. But if Chopra’s dress at the 88th annual Academy Awards is any indication, that’s simply not true. The Indian beauty stunned in a white Zuhair Murad gown – the crisp shade’s contrast against her brown skin was lovely and ethereal.
2. A bold lip is always a good idea
Chopra is often seen wearing a bright red, hot pink or wine-colored lipstick. She looks amazing with a pop of color along the lips – sophisticated, glamorous and vibrant. Adding a bright lipstick is such a simple, fast way to take any look to the next level. We love that Chopra experiments with different shades and wears bright lipstick whether she’s on the red carpet or simply out during the day.
3. A simple hair swap can make all the difference
Audiences swoon over Chopra’s hair even when it’s effortlessly tousled for her role as Alex Parrish on “Quantico.” When you have a head of hair like that, you don’t need to put much effort into it – but Chopra still manages to play with different hairstyles often. She’ll do sleek updos, easy loose side braids, sleek bangs, bouncy ponytails and large, voluminous curls…basically, there’s very little this actress won’t try when it comes to hair. And we love that versatility.
4. Don’t be afraid to wear color
While many of us gravitate towards basics in shades like black, white and gray, Chopra tends to venture out and wear bright colors. They look stunning against her complexion and really make her stand out next to others who wear neutrals. You don’t have to wear color all the time, but once in a while, take a cue from Indian fashion and go for the bright option.
5. Show off your favorite body part
Chopra has incredible arms and shoulders and she’s not afraid to show off the fruits of her hard work. She tends to favor strapless, one-shoulder and halter styles, which put her killer arms and defined collar bone on full display. If you love your legs, wear mini skirts. If you have amazing abs, don’t be afraid to don a crop top. Whatever it is, just celebrate the feature that makes you feel great about yourself.
