5 Things We Learned From Deepika Padukone’s Paper Magazine Interview

Padukone has been in the public eye for over a decade but we’re still learning more about the star.

When someone is as famous as Deepika Padukone, it’s easy to assume you know all there is to know about that his or her life. But a recent feature on her in the American Paper Magazine proves otherwise.

The magazine features the Bollywood beauty on the cover of its digital issue, which is a huge deal! Padukone has certainly graced the pages of many Indian magazines in her time but a major mainstream feature like this means one thing, America and the rest of the world is about to become very familiar with the woman who is arguably Bollywood’s biggest star.

She will make her Hollywood debut in 2017 with upcoming action flick “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” alongside Vin Diesel, Nina Dobrev, Samuel L. Jackson, Ruby Rose, Rory McCann. Not too shabby for a premiere global crossover act.

Of course, her Paper cover isn’t the first mention Padukone has got in mainstream American media. Vanity Fair named her second in a list of 11 actors to look out for in 2017. Like us, everyone in the west is already excited to see the talent she brings!

Here are five revelations we took from her interview with Paper.

1.) Making the move to western media wasn’t easy for her:

It’s easy to look at Padukone and assume she is unfailingly confident but the truth is, she wasn’t totally comfortable with the idea of making the international leap. “I have to admit that before I left India, I was very, very nervous about working in a new environment with a new setup and new people. And, yes, I think the first couple of days there, it did take me a while to get used to a new environment and people I had never worked with before. But I think within a couple of days I got extremely comfortable,” she said.

2.) She wants to follow in Emma Stone’s footsteps:

She’s collaborated with the likes of Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan but that doesn’t mean Padukone doesn’t dream of acting alongside American hunks! When asked to name her dream romantic comedy co-star, Padukone went with an answer most American women will understand all too well: “As cliché as it may sound, for now, I would have to stick with Bradley Cooper or Ryan Gosling,” Padukone confessed.

3.) She doesn’t love social media:

Being active on all social platforms is a big part of being an entertainer today. Fans love to engage with their favorite stars, and sometimes a well-timed Instagram post or tweet is all it takes to send thousands of fans to their nearest movie theaters to take in a certain star’s film. With that being said, Padukone is not a huge fan of the exposure social media provides. Though she admits that social media has its strengths, she also added, “I think social media is a bit contradictory to my personality. I’m someone who likes to keep things personal and private, and I’m not too comfortable with sharing my every mood and emotion.”

4.) For Padukone, acting in the U.S. is not so different from acting in India:

Padukone needn’t have been nervous about her crossover. The star told Paper that, aside from the fact that “xXx” was filmed in English, the experience of filming it was quite similar to the process of creating Indian films. “I remember telling a lot of my friends that from an emotional point of view and from a storyline point of view, xXx is exactly like any other Indian movie I think other than the fact that this movie is going to be in English. I’m very certain that the whole of India is going to connect with this movie,” she said.

5.) She considers herself a shy person:

Turns out even A-list celebrities have trouble communicating! Padukone told the magazine that of all the social media platforms, she prefers Instagram. Why? Because she doesn’t need to use many words on the platform – which she appreciates because she’s not the boldest person. “Personally, I’m someone who is very shy. I’m not someone who is very comfortable with expressing myself with words,” she said. “But I like expressing myself through emotion, and I think images and photographs are a great medium for that.”
