Patna: A 55-year-old man was beaten to death by a violent mob of around 300 people allegedly over suspicion of cattle theft in Bihar’s Araria district, according to media reports.
The police lodged a case and initiated an investigation after a couple of videos of the incident, which purportedly took place on December29, went viral on January 1.
In the videos, the deceased, identified as Kabul Miyan, can be seen pleading mercy while he is being backed in the face, hit with sticks and repeatedly abused and called thief.
According to a NDTV report, the attackers, led by another local called Muslim Miyan, can be heard laughing and encouraging each other to continue thrashing the man. They even removed the victim’s clothes as they rained blows on him.
The incident reportedly took place on December 29 in Simarbani village, about 300 km from Patna. While some of the attackers are visible in the viral videos, the police are yet to nab the culprits.
According to the police, the attackers were known to the victim and they belong to the same community.
Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, targeted the government over the lynchings and tweeted, “Mobocracy prevails in Bihar. 3 people died due to mob lynchings in last 24 hours. Mandate robbers led by Nitish Kumar has turned Bihar into “Lynch-Vihar”. 7 Murders in last 24 hours. Law and order is out of control in Bihar as Nitish government is working hand-in-glove with criminals.”
In another incident in Nalanda district, a 13-year-old boy was beaten to death, a day after a RJD leader was shot dead.
The deceased boy was the son of the man accused of shooting dead RJD leader Indal Paswan on January 1. Police have arrested five people in connection with the case so far.
