India’s first and truly talented transgender band, 6 Pack Band, released a new song called “Ae Raju,” and it is phenomenal for many reasons.
The song and its video is unlike anything they have done before. For one, it’s animated and looks like a live comic book. Each of the six members—Komal Jagtap, Bhavika Patil, Fida Khan, Chandrika Suvarnakar, Asha Jagtap and Ravina Jagtap—are depicted almost as superheroes in their own way. Whether they travel in trains or taxi’s through Colaba or Bandra in Mumbai, they tell us how they are treated: the other person is always scared or pitiful to see them. However, they take it in stride and this song is nothing but evidence of that.
The gang looks like they are having fun dancing to the peppy tunes and best of all, they get to flaunt their moves alongside one of their big fans, Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan. He enters the video halfway through, is enjoying the band’s music on his phone and eventually joins them to dole it all out with his famous dancing skills.
This is not the first time 6 Pack Band has collaborated with Bollywood stars. In their first song, “Hum Hain Happy,” actress Anushka Sharma lent her voice as the narrator. Their second song, “Sab Rabde Bande,” saw them crooning with music sensation Sonu Nigam.
Formed in 2015 by Ashish Patel, the head of Yash Raj Films’ youth division called Y-Films, 6 Pack Band is smashing records and gaining momentum with their flair for producing out-of-the-box songs.
This band is the first solid effort to portray the transgender community, known as hijras in India, in a new, much-deserved light. We cannot wait to see what wonderful things the band has in store for us.
