6 Pack Band Teams up With Sonu Nigam to Shed Light on Transgender Discrimination

India's first transgender band is back with an inspiring new track, “Sab Rab De Bande.”

India’s first, and truly talented, transgender band–6 Pack Band–released their new song to harmonize with Republic Day. Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam lends his voice to this soothing and inspiring new track, “Sab Rab De Bande.” To correspond with lyrics that try to school us about gender discrimination, the video features an eye-opening storyline (aside from the not-subtle-at-all promotions of the investing tea brand).

The message of the song reminds us of how we are all made from the same soil and by the same God. Despite that, we tend to ignore, judge, loathe and fear the third gender for no valid reason. In the face of all these challenges, the video portrays the struggle that hijras face in our society, including their own family, as they go about in an attempt to live a dignified life of normalcy.

Dressed in beautiful red saris, the six members of the band look lovely as they sing along with Nigam. The embedded storyline in the music video also provides a heartwrenching look at the bigotry one transgender woman faces throughout her life, from playing dress up as a child, all the way to moving into a new apartment as an adult.

Launched earlier this month by YFilms, the youth division of Yash Raj Films, the 6 Pack Band consists of members who were chosen from around 200 auditionees. The band’s first song was a cover of Pharell Williams’ “Happy” and was a smashing hit.

With each song and video, the band aims to make powerful social statements and educate the audiences by showcasing their perspective on the world. Clearly, they are off to a wonderful start.
