New Delhi: The brave hearts of India’s Defence force will be honoured with gallantry awards on the occasion of 73rd Independence Day on Friday. The winners will include Indian Army’s Sapper Prakash Jadhav of 1 Rashtriya Rifles (Mahar) who will be posthumously conferred Kirti Chakra for his performance in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Moreover, eight Army personnel are to be awarded Shaurya Chakra, of which five will be posthumous. Eight Army personnel will be conferred with Bar to Sena Medals, 90 will be awarded Sena Medals and four members of Operation Rakhshak will be conferred Mention in Dispatches.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down Pakistan’s F-16 and spent nearly 60 hours in Pakistan’s captivity following the February Balakot airstrike, will be conferred Vir Chakra on Independence Day. Along with him, five IAF pilots who conducted airstrikes in Pakistan’s Balakot will also get Vayu Sena medal.

Besides, 56 personnel have been awarded Fire Service Medals ahead of Independence Day this year. Of these, President’s Fire Service Medal for Gallantry have been awarded to one personnel, President’s Fire Service Medal for Distinguished Service to eight personnel and Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service to 47 personnel.

Forty-four personnel have also been awarded Home Guard and Civil Defence Medals. Of these, President’s HG and CD Medal for Distinguished Service have been awarded to eight personnel and Home Guards and Civil Defence Medal for Meritorious Service to 36 personnel.

On the other hand, a total of 946 police personnel have been awarded gallantry medals, including 72 from CRPF, 61 from Jammu and Kashmir police, 23 from Odisha, nine from Chhattisgarh and the rest from other states and union territories and CAPFs.

The Gallantry Awards are announced twice a year, first on Republic Day and then on Independence Day to honour the soldiers of India’s Defence force for their remarkable performance. The order of precedence of these awards is the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra.
