June 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first ever television interview after he assumed office in 2014, was the talk of the town for several days after it was aired on June 27. The interview drew all sorts of reactions on social media, with many criticising Arnab Goswami for softening his aggressive tone for this particular interview. While the general consensus seemed to be that Goswami had been unfairly mild with the PM, one particular news channel went so far as to take a personal swipe at him, on social media.
Leading Hindi news channel Aaj Tak faced flak after tweeting a meme that took a swipe at the PM and Goswami’s interview. The tweet read, ‘Ahem, Ahem! Yuki Yeh Maine Nahi Bola :)’ The picture attached with the tweet called Goswami a ‘chamcha’ (sycophant) of the PM. It showed a snapshot of Modi being interviewed by Goswami and another with Modi being interviewed by Karan Thapar. The second image showed Modi having a drink of water, indicating that the interview with Thapar made Modi feel uncomfortable. The tweet was posted from the channel’s official Twitter handle and Aaj Tak faced a lot of heat over it, from users who pointed out that the tweet violated journalistic ethics. Many Twitter users started tweeting to Aaj Tak, reprimanding them for resorting to cheap commentary and name calling. One of the users tweeted, “Dear @aajtak @aroonpurie shame on you..this is journalism..a media handle reduced to a lowly troll? #ShameOnAajTak”. Soon enough, #ShameOnAajTak started trending on the site and the channel was forced to apologise.
Aaj Tak clarified that the tweet was supposed to go from a personal account, but was posted from the official handle of the channel, by mistake. They even requested one user to delete the tweet, but he didn’t comply.
