New Delhi, June 3: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to hold its own Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) hackathon today, at the same time and day as the Election Commission of India (ECI), which has invited all the political parties to prove that the EVMs are rigged and can be tampered with. According to the reports, the engineers of the AAP will hold the hackathon to prove their claims that EVMs can be tampered with to favour a particular political party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in this case. The AAP said that it will hold the EVM hackathon on the lines of the demonstration the party had held in the Delhi Assembly last month. The party has invited other political parties, experts and people from the Election Commission to take part in the EVM hackathon. “The Election Commission never accepted our demand for a hackathon. What it is holding is only a challenge. So the AAP’s tech group decided to hold our own challenge on June 3,” said Saurabh Bhardwaj explaining the purpose of the EVM hackathon. “We challenge the Election Commission to break into the machine at our hackathon,” he said.
The EVM hackathon was announced after several claims by the political parties such as AAP, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) that EVMs can be tampered with. The claims were first made by Mayawati alleged foul play after her party’s dismal show in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017. “The results in UP and Uttarakhand are surprising and not palatable to anyone…it seems EVMs did not accept votes polled for any party other than BJP,” said Mayawati. Following which, Arvind Kejriwal also demanded that EVMs should be scrapped and the EC should hold the elections through ballot papers.
The Election Commission will also hold its EVM hackathon on Saturday at 10 AM. “The vote machine (EVM) challenge is on as scheduled. It will start at 10 am. The NCP and CPI-M have nominated three representatives each. The challenge will happen in two separate halls simultaneously,” an Election Commission spokesperson said on Friday evening. With growing controversy over the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the Election Commission of India (ECI) on May 20 held a live demonstration of the EVMs and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail System (VVPATs). At the press conference, Nasim Zaidi announced that the EC will hold an EVM hackathon challenge from June 3 in which it invited all the political parties to take part in it.

AAP also said that the party believes that the June 3 EC demonstration is a pure eye-wash which will achieve nothing. To prove its point, AAP will conduct a parallel hackathon/demonstration of its own EVM prototype, under the same conditions as EC has proposed – only visual inspection and press of keys will be allowed. No other hardware or software experiments will be allowed.
