New Delhi, Feb 10: Known as the pilgrimage of budding politicians, the international university at the heart of capital — Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) — is in news again. This time the students’ wing of ruling BJP government ABVP had staged a protest against the students who had commemorated the judicial hanging of Afzal Guru by screening a movie on Tuesday night and termed it as anti national.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members not only met Vice Chancellor and requested him to rusticate the students, but also called for a press conference on Wednesday and termed the students — who screened the ‘Pro-Afzal’ movie last night — as anti national. The right wing members also demanded Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to take stringent action against those ‘who want to destroy the peace and harmony of the country’. On the other hand, there are those who are of the opinion that their freedom of speech is being targeted and they have not done anything that is either communal or anti-national. In order to show their protest, students wing of all the other organisations participated in the peaceful rally that started from Sabarmati Hostel to Ganga Dhaba in JNU. Taking at a closer look to the whole incident, the whole issue raised by the right wing members is similar to what happened in University of Hyderabad when Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula — who protested against hanging of Yakub Memon — was termed as anti-national. With several drama unfolding over last couple of months, he committed suicide and we all know what happened after that and in the political arena. Though nothing could be said right now, but is this a glimpse of another Rohith in making or the MHRD will be cautious this time! Lets see.
