Mumbai, July 28: Actor Suchitra Krishnamoorthi was sexually abused on Twitter from unknown people over her tweets on ‘azaan’ on Sunday. Following a series of tweets aimed to harass her, Krishnamoorthi filed a complaint at the Oshiwara police station on Wednesday. According to the complaint, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi was sexually abused after she posted a few tweets, saying she does not need public loudspeakers to remind her of God and loudspeakers inconvenienced her and others in the locality.
An FIR was registered under sections 509 of the IPC and 67 A of the Information Technology Act against some unknown people who abused her on Twitter.
On Sunday, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi had tweeted: “Came home at 4.45am 2 most aggressive / ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiosity.” While some praised her for speaking about the issue, others sexually abused her online, calling her a prostitute and attention-seeker.

A day after she labelled loudspeakers as ‘uncivilised’, the Samajwadi Party mocked her, saying that her sleep is more important than the call to prayers. “Such irresponsible comments have been made in the past also. I am unable to understand what kind of people they are. I would like to know how does azaan, which otherwise purifies you on hearing, bother her. May be her sleep is more important,” SP leader Juhi Singh was quoted as saying by ANI, on Monday.
“i wake up at Brahmamuhurt of my own accord & do my prayers & riyaz.& yoga. I dont need public loudspeakers to remind me of my God or my duty,” (sic) she said. “nobody objects to azaan or prayers during decent hours. But to be waking up entire neighbourhood at 5 am is not civilized,” (sic) she added.
Saying that she has been stonewalled before for speaking about it, Suchitra said, “I first wrote about this [azaan issue] in 2009 and tried to initiate a dialogue with my then MLA and I was asked to just completely back off. They told me, ‘You are a lady, you are alone, don’t take panga.’ she told HT, adding “Just because somebody is threatening you or they don’t like what you’re saying, it doesn’t mean you stop saying what you think is right. I feel after Sonu’s tweet, the azaan in my area has become louder. It’s almost like retaliation.”
