Bengaluru: Amidst a row over the venue, the Union Government on Saturday gave a final confirmation that Aero India 2019 airshow would be held in Bangalore in February next year. Notably, Aero India is Asia’s largest military aviation exhibition. “The Government has decided to hold the Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru from 20 – 24 February 2019. This five-day event will combine a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries with public air shows,” a government press release said.
Also, think-tanks from across the world will participate in the event, apart from aerospace industry giants who would also be gracing the event. The biennial event was last held in Bengaluru in February 2017. The five-day event will be held at the Yelahanka base of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the city’s northern outskirts amid tight security. “The trade event will showcase technologies and products of global and Indian aerospace and defence firms, with static and flying display of military and civil aircraft, including fighters, jets, helicopters and air weapons.
Earlier, HD Kumaraswamy-led Karnataka government came down heavily on Centre after it was reported that Defence Ministry is planning to shift Aero India, a biennial air show and aviation exhibition held in Bengaluru to Lucknow. Reacting strongly to the issue, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said, “We have been India’s defence hub since Independence, but under the NDA, we are constantly losing key defense projects and flagship programs.” He also asked Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to clarify her stand on the matter.
Notably, Parameshwara’s remarks came after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday urged Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to shift the venue of Aero India as it would benefit the defence production in the state.
“I request the defence minister to hold the Aero India show in Uttar Pradesh. We will provide every type of facility. In this context, I request her to announce this at the earliest so that we can proceed with the preparations,” UP CM Adityanath had said, while speaking at an event in Aligarh.
